Canada Cleared of US Allegations of Manipulating Bobsleigh Qualifying Race

Canada's skeleton athletes were cleared of accusations that they rigged a selection race for the upcoming Games, which allegedly denied competitors from other nations a chance to qualify.

Central Claim and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian accused the Canadian squad of withdrawing a majority of its entered athletes from a race in Lake Placid. She claimed this shrunk the competition, making fewer qualifying points available. Although she took first place, Uhlaender failed to earn her berth for the 2026 Olympics.

“The current IBSF Rules allow National Federations to pull competitors from competition at any time,” declared the governing body.

After reviewing the matter, the federation stated it would take no action, dismissing the complaints as no rules were broken of its code.

Canada's Explanation

Reacting to the claims, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton defended the decision, citing competitor health and the need for recovery. The organization stated that the individuals pulled had competed extensively that week and the decision was “appropriate, transparent and aligned with both athlete welfare and the sport's fairness.”

Coaches from the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had previously expressed “deep worry” about the selection system's integrity.

The Athlete's Future

The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games are planned to be her last Games. Her path to qualification remains, the probable American berths are projected for other athletes. Uhlaender is a 2012 world gold medalist whose closest Olympic finish was fourth place in 2014.

A Contentious Sporting Climate

This incident comes during a time of heightened tension in athletic competitions involving Canada and the US. Recent political rhetoric and tariff impositions have fueled a spirited competitive atmosphere. Recent memorable clashes include the 4 Nations Face-off and a thrilling World Series featuring clubs in the two countries.
