Debated US-backed Gaza Relief Group Concludes Relief Activities

The controversial, United States and Israel-funded GHF aid organization announces it is winding down its relief activities in the Gaza region, following nearly half a year.

The group had previously halted its three food distribution sites in Gaza following the halt in hostilities between Palestinian factions and Israel came into force recently.

The organization attempted to bypass the UN as the chief distributor of relief to Palestinian residents.

UN and other aid agencies refused to co-operate with its system, stating it was improper and dangerous.

Many residents were lost their lives while trying to acquire nourishment amid turbulent circumstances near the foundation's locations, primarily from Israeli forces, as reported by United Nations.

The Israeli military claimed its troops fired cautionary rounds.

Program Termination

The GHF said on Monday that it was winding down operations now because of the "effective conclusion of its emergency mission", with a cumulative three million shipments containing the amounting to in excess of 187 million sustenance units provided to residents.

The foundation's chief officer, the foundation leader, further mentioned the United States-operated coordination body - which has been established to help implement US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "taking over and developing the model GHF piloted".

"We call upon all international human rights organisations to ensure that it does not escape accountability after resulting in fatalities and harm of numerous Palestinians and obscuring the starvation policy employed by the Israeli government."

Organization Timeline

The GHF began operations in Gaza on May 26th, a short period subsequent to Israeli authorities had somewhat relaxed a comprehensive closure on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that continued for 77 days and caused severe shortages of essential supplies.

After 90 days, a food crisis was announced in Gaza City.

The GHF's food distribution sites in various parts of the Palestinian territory were managed by United States-based protection companies and located inside regions under Israeli military authority.

Relief Agency Issues

United Nations agencies and their collaborators claimed the system breached the fundamental humanitarian principles of non-partisanship, even-handedness and self-determination, and that channelling desperate people into armed forces regions was intrinsically hazardous.

International human rights monitoring body said it recorded the deaths of a minimum of 859 residents attempting to obtain nourishment in the vicinity of GHF sites between late May through end of July.

An additional 514 individuals were killed near the routes of UN and other aid convoys, it further stated.

Most of them were lost their lives due to the Israel's armed forces, as per the organization's documentation.

Conflicting Accounts

Israeli defense forces claimed its forces had discharged cautionary rounds at individuals who came near them in a "intimidating" fashion.

The organization declared there were no shootings at the relief locations and claimed the international organization of using "inaccurate and deceptive" statistics from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.

Ongoing Situation

The GHF's future had been unclear since Hamas and Israel agreed a halt in hostilities arrangement to carry out the first phase of Trump's peace plan.

The arrangement specified relief provision would take place "absent meddling from the two parties through the United Nations and its agencies, and the international relief society, in combination with other international institutions not associated in any manner" with militant groups and the Israeli government.

United Nations representative the UN spokesman stated recently that the GHF's shutdown would have "no influence" on its operations "because we never worked with them".

The spokesperson additionally stated that while additional assistance was reaching the Palestinian territory since the halt in hostilities began on early October, it was "inadequate to meet all the needs" of the over two million inhabitants.
