Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Departs After Pivot Into Fried Chicken.

A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have hit peak pizza while expanding the company into fried chicken has been removed after conflicts with its directors.

Executive Change

Rennie is departing after just two years in leadership, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a permanent CEO.

Rennie, who was with Domino's for a substantial period, had attempted to shift Britain's largest pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, commenting earlier this month there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He observed poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the globe.

Governance Tensions

It is understood that there was disagreement between Rennie and the governance team over his focus and management style, although Domino's announcement said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.

Recent Brand Introduction

In September, the chain unveiled its Chick 'N' Dip offering – which the former chief called a “major strategic shift” for the group – and is testing it in select stores in the North West region and the province.

While the firm is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it views chicken products as an addition to its main pizza offerings.

Board Statement

The Domino's chair, the company chair, commented: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and value creation in our primary operations. We are prioritizing identifying the ideal CEO to oversee the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”

Industry Challenges

Recently, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said orders dipped by 1.5 percent in the Q3. In the summer, it warned that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.

Competitors are also struggling. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of dozens of outlets a recently, after the business behind its UK venues fell into administration.

Health Initiatives

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards balanced diets, Domino's has rolled out reduced-calorie options, such as its light base range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has 909 calories.

Interim Leadership

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the betting firm William Hill. It is thought that she is not seeking to occupy the chief executive role on a full-time basis.

She said: “Our team has a number of active development and performance initiatives that we will be focused on implementing at a rapid rate.”

Frampton noted these comprised further work on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its customer retention initiative.

The pizza chain is also lacking a long-term chief financial officer until the spring, when a new appointee starts from the beverage producer a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
