The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years Old

Global audiences mourns the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing reggae music worldwide. The artist has died at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and positive spirit brought him a large and longstanding fanbase.

Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

He is among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
