The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
